Not Seeing PSD Thumbnails in Explorer?

Friday, March 20th, 2009

I was working on a computer that wasn’t able to view PSD thumbnails in Windows Explorer. Instead of these guys:

PSD Thumbnails on Windows

I wanted to see that little preview to make sorting files easier. A search on Google later I found how easy it was to fix these little buggers. It’s an easy fix that requires you update registry settings and add a .DLL to the Photoshop installed folder.

Download the files to fix your Photoshop PSD thumbnails. (photoshopDLL.rar / 57.3 KB)

The DLL is called PSICON.DLL.

They used to pack it in the directory, but no longer do. The DLL should be pasted in:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell.
Also inside the archive above is detailed instructions to update your registry.

Before you begin…

  • Ensure the appropriate directory is designated in the registry. (ie: C:/ instead of D:/)
  • Be using Photoshop CS1 or newer. Older versions have not been tested.
  • Read the packaged instructions carefully to avoid mistakes. I’m not responsible if you make a mistake.

If you are unable to view PSD thumbnails in Explorer after installing, try restarting the computer or logging-on or off.
